National Office Supplies Distribution Centre Mezzanine Floor Installation
A national wholesaler of office supplies engaged Teccon to consult on ways to increase stock lines while maintaining and improving on a respected next delivery service by adding the number of pallet racking and pick locations in their regional distribution centres. This need was driven by their continued success in the market, their expansion plans and desire to optimise existing warehouse efficiency.
Challenge
8000 bays of existing pallet racking systems were already in place but not positioned for optimal expansion.
Empty space above the operational docking stations were a prime opportunity but careful management would be necessary to maintain the efficiency of the warehouse.
Solution
A consultation phase with Teccon identified key project requirements to construct mezzanines above the docking stations in 2 of the 3 warehouses. In addition the existing pallet racking in the midlands distribution centre would be reconfigured creating space for additional racking.
The complete storage project added more than 3300 sq metres over a two tier and single tier mezzanine floor, 3000 bays of Dexion industrial steel Hi280 shelving, 300 bays of Dexion narrow aisle pallet racking and alterations to the existing 8000 wide aisle pallet racking system.
Midlands Distribution Centre
Work was spread over 2 warehouses and created 2250 sq mtrs on a two tier mezzanine floor which was then populated with over 2000 bays of industrial shelving. This produced in the region of 50,000 sku’s locations giving great flexibility and diversity for storage. The shelving was a mix of hanging garment rails, short span and longspan shelving.
On the warehouse floor 300 bays of narrow aisle pallet racking were added in the space created by making alterations to the existing 8000 bay pallet racking system.
South East Distribution Centre
The South East expansion included a single storey mezzanine, constructed over 13 docking stations giving the client additional 830 sq mtrs of space. This was used to install 750 bays of Dexion Hi280 shelving.
Locating the mezzanines and the shelving above the otherwise unused and dead space has increased the warehouse's storage capacity and avoided the need to build a warehouse extension or move to larger premises.
Both distribution centres were completed ahead of schedule through close and open communication with the client.
Strategically the client now has improved capacity to move and deliver stock directly to customers, improving their ability to generate sales through delivery commitment and entering new product areas.
