Optimising Longspan Shelving Height for Picking & Assembly

An international manufacturer of over 600,000 plastic industrial components and parts asked Teccon to consult on and supply replacement shelving to house a large range of products ready to be picked and assembled. The current shelving was 4m high and the available height was 6m.

The goal was to improve the manual picking process, optimising the floor space and warehouse height, increasing storage capacity and improving the flow of components to the nearby assembly line.

Challenge

The shelving in place was in constant use and in a confined space. It wouldn’t be possible to remove all the shelving at the same time and conduct a straight replacement. Operational integrity had to be maintained throughout.

Solution

Our consultation phase identified improvements to the shelving system and specified the pre-galvanised Dexion Longsoan 3 Shelving system. Runs of 6m high shelving over 11 levels, maximised the height opportunity of the warehouse. Single and Double entry shelving runs were combined for even more flexible storage options.

Improved Capacity

After reviewing the physical stock weights and dimensions we optimised the shelving for the exact requirements. Along with the additional height available this increased the shelving height from 4m to 6m and took the number of shelves from 7 to 11 increasing capacity greatly.

Improved Picking

Dexion Longspan 3 Shelving uses a fully pre-galvanised frame with a brighter, cleaner and more reflective appearance making it easier for light to travel within the shelving bays to help identify small parts components more quickly.

Improved Assembly

More capacity and easier access meant components could be picked faster and more efficiently. This is turn increased the productivity of assembly line and introduced the possibility of adding further assembly operatives.

Flexible Rollout

After the consultancy period It was decided that Teccon would assemble the shelving units ready for installation and set them on-site. This gave the customer the flexibility to remove and replace each run in phases maintaining the operational integrity of the assembly line.
