Heavy Duty Cantilever Racking for Pre-assembly Storage

A multinational manufacturer of marine equipment needed advice and a solution to store heavy and oversized parts after consolidating two warehouses on a new site.

After a successful tender process, the Teccon team was selected to consult and specify a solution for storing a range of marine parts on a medium- and long-term basis, as they waited to be assembled on-site on an order-by-order basis.

Following a comprehensive design and consultation process, the project was delivered with a combination of cantilever racking, P90 pallet racking, and safety features such as mesh decking and rack-end protection.

Challenge

The customer’s high volume of extremely heavy stock raised concerns regarding the depth of the floor and the fixings needed to support the weight of the loaded racking.

The size of the cantilever racking installed required a telehandler truck and a specialist team to expertly and carefully erect each support.

Further customer requirements included employing colour-coded racking beams to denote load weights of 2 or 3 tonnes.

Solution

Preparation, Planning and Execution

Being engaged early in the warehouse development, we were able to specify a 450mm concrete slab floor and fixings to support the considerable weight of the fully loaded solution.

Heavy Duty Cantilever Racking

Well-known for its suitability to store long or awkward items, Cantilever Racking was the only viable choice for the long marine equipment parts awaiting assembly.

The large volume of parts that needed to be stored, coupled with the spacious new building, allowed us to capitalise on both the height and length options available with our cantilever racking. Once installed, the cantilever solution measured 11.5m high and 2.4m deep, with each level holding 3000kg. A specialist telehandler truck was used to carefully erect the structure.

Pallet Racking

For the storage of motors and palletised parts, Dexion P90 pallet racking with mesh decking and control was the perfect solution.

Flexible enough to hold a variety of stock items and strong enough to remain stable when fully laden, the addition of optional beam colours to denote 2- or 3-tonne load weights was a valuable feature for high multi-level decking. While the customer required bays to support 21 tonnes, this did not exceed the standard load weights of the Dexion P90 racking. This capability highlighted Teccon’s expertise and access to high-grade racking options as standard.

In total, the custom-built racking solution utilised 9.5km of steel solely for the uprights making it a project deserving of recognition for both its capacity and load-bearing values.

Planning and Roll-out

From the initial consultation through to handover, we worked closely with the client for 15 months, with installation taking four weeks.
